Creating the Minimal SharePoint Master Page
As mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, when you are using master pages it is important that pages that are derived from that master page not have asp:Content tags that do not map directly to an asp:ContentPlaceHolder on the master page. If a page does contain extra asp:Content tags, the page will render with an error when you try to browse to it.
What this means to an application developer is that if you want to set your custom master page to be the default master page for the site, you will need to include asp:ContentPlaceHolders to account for all the asp:Content tags that exist on SharePoint pages that are not in your control.
