10. Shell Integration
Windows 8 has a particular user experience (UX) that is unique. This UX is most easily spotted in the Start screen, which shows tiles and toast notifications, both of which allow an app to communicate with the user regardless of whether the app is currently in the foreground or even running. In this chapter, we’re going to look at how to build “live” tiles, secondary tiles (for deep linking into an app), tile badges (the little numbers you see on some tiles), and lock-screen notifications as well as the background task facility that allows an app to keep all of that notification data up to date.
