In this chapter, we cover a few of the latest technologies that are transforming the way we produce our artificial world. We cover some new materials and the scientific breakthroughs that allow us to engineer them.


Nanotechnology refers to the scientific discipline of engineering products or manipulating structures and processes at the nanometer level, typically one to a hundred nanometers. Being one-billionth of a meter, a nanometer is just 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom; nanotechnology therefore can operate at the atomic or molecular level.
