3  Peace Theory and Natural Resources Companies as Non-State Actors

The focus of this chapter is upon academic peace and conflict theory. Although theorists often state that businesses have a role to play in creating local-level conditions of peace, they rarely go into any detail about how that should happen due to disciplinary boundaries. Pushing the envelope of existing peace and conflict theory, this chapter advances the inclusion of businesses, especially MNEs, which rival the social, environmental and economic influence of small nations. The methodology and methods of applying this enhanced theory are also described.
