Leading an organisation in a functional area can be rewarding and personally fulfilling. It can also be tough. The guidance and wisdom of a mentor can be invaluable. The wisdom imparted by someone who has ‘been there, seen it and done it’ can save a leader oceans of time. Mentoring support provides reassurance and can prevent mistake making or unnecessary risk taking in a leader. Ultimately, this intervention benefits the business.

This chapter takes a look at mentoring in the context of success and leadership. We consider how to help a client define success and handle thoughts of limitation when they show up. Many of the tools can be used in other leadership areas. We invite you to consider the exercises from your perspective as a leadership mentor and as yourself, in whatever capacity you lead – as an organisational leader or as the leader in your life.
