GLOSSARY

Agent—A person who volunteers or who is recruited by a case officer to provide information or other services covertly to the CIA.

Asset—Possibly an agent, but perhaps someone or something else that facilitates clandestine operations; could refer to a clandestine capability, such as phone taps, safe houses, surveillance vehicles, and the like, available to a CIA field facility.

Baseline—The way a person speaks and behaves under normal, or relatively stimulus-free, conditions.

Case officer—A person employed by the Central Intelligence Agency’s National Clandestine Service (see below) who is responsible for recruiting and running agents and other clandestine activity, including covert action.
