Taking Preventative Actions with Expert Advice

Everyone knows that prevention is better than cure wherever possible, and you won’t be surprised to find that this section forms the major part of this chapter. You can consult plenty of different experts to help you take preventative measures to protect your business. In this section, we describe situations that require you to get the experts in – perhaps to advise on things such as preventative measures that give protection to your critical activities. Some of the measures we describe are required legally, but even those that aren’t are pretty much essential as part of business continuity.

In certain situations and at certain times you may have no choice but to call in the experts. These areas are the ones bound by legislation, regulations or legalese and of course you need to be aware of them in advance of any disruption. In this section, we examine the most common areas for small and medium-sized businesses: health and safety legislation, trading standards compliance and the specific issue of hazardous materials.
