Product Life Cycle
Objective 12-3 Describe the stages of the product life cycle (PLC) and methods for extending a product’s life.
When a product reaches the market, it begins the product life cycle (PLC), a series of stages through which it passes during its commercial life. Depending on the product’s ability to attract and keep customers, its PLC may be a matter of months, years, or decades. Strong, mature products (such as Clorox bleach and H&R Block tax preparation) have had long productive lives. Some, like Coca-Cola, just seem to go on and on, while others, like VCRs and portable cassette tape players, progress through all four stages fairly quickly, are replaced by products based on newer technologies, and then disappear.
