What is Metadata?
In the earlier days of data warehousing and business intelligence (BI), the concept of metadata was often described using the phrase “data about the data”—a somewhat nonenlightening description, teetering on the edge of being a circular definition. Not only that, while the practice area of metadata management is typically embraced by corporate stakeholders at first, the challenges of defining, planning, and executing a metadata strategy coupled with the complexities of the tools and supporting techniques for metadata management can stall a metadata initiative, and can lead to its incremental compartmentalization and eventual marginalization into oblivion.
