Chapter 2. Business Intelligence in the Organization

Overview

How do other organizations plan for Business Intelligence? How do they ensure that the concept of BI is well embedded in the corporate structure and supported by the organization as a whole? How and by whom is BI used, driven, and supported? Do these organizations see value in setting up Business Intelligence Competency Centers?

To help you find answers to these questions, this chapter provides the results of a survey conducted by BetterManagement in 2005 entitled "How Do You Plan for Business Intelligence?" You can use the results as points of comparison for your own organization.

Background

In March 2005, BetterManagement subscribers completed a survey about the state of BI and BICCs in their organizations. This online survey was completed by 220 companies across various industries, sizes, geographic locations, and job levels. The specific objectives of the research were to determine how BICCs were developed and deployed within the organization. Note: Some totals in the exhibits do not sum to 100% because of rounding.

Respondents

Industry. The participants in the study came from a variety of industries. The service industry had the highest representation with 18%, followed by information technology at 16%, banking and financial services at 10%, and manufacturing at 9%.
