Leadership has been examined and poked and prodded from every angle but remains an elusive concept. There have been many comparisons and contrasts between leadership and management.

John Kotter (1990) has stated:

Leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of action. Management is about coping with complexity. Leadership is about coping with change. Leadership complements management; it doesn’t replace it. Companies manage complexity by planning and budgeting, by controlling and problem solving. By contrast, leading an organization begins by setting direction, aligning people to the direction, and inspiring people to achieve a vision.
