This principle of ancient Jewish wisdom underpins and supports the Bible's intersection with business. You must internalize the fact that personal wealth is the result of doing the right thing. Money is the consequence of doing the right things. There. Do not focus on the consequence itself, focus on what causes the effect, which is serving your fellow man. When you serve other human beings, personal wealth follows. It cannot be the other way around. You bring about an effect by activating the correct cause, not by focusing on the effect itself.
This is one reason not to envy others. Often in business, as in life, we will see our superiors and those who have done better for themselves than we have, and we will think, “I want that.” When we do this, we find ourselves growing bitter and cynical when we fail to make progress on our goals. This is ironic given that the reason we aren't getting anywhere is precisely because we are focusing on what we want rather than focusing on what we should be doing. Instead of focusing on imagined rewards, focus on serving God's other children, for they are your customers. Let this and only this preoccupy your mind when you are at work.
