If There Is No Hebrew Word for Something, Then That Thing Does Not Exist

A few years ago, I had the fortunate experience of sailing across the Pacific, a lifelong ambition of mine. My wife and I loaded the sailboat up with our children and provisions and we set sail from the West Coast to Hawaii. It was a 22-day voyage. One of the most trying parts was standing watch at night. You have to stand watch to make sure you don't hit other ships or cargo containers that have been washed overboard; I was reminded of this by what happened to the character played by Robert Redford in the 2013 movie All Is Lost. Nighttime watches can really strain your eyes, so we take shifts. About halfway into the trip, I was exhausted and my eyes were tired and I was getting worried about water. Having little kids onboard, I wanted to be sure our water tanks were okay. Normally I check the water tanks every day or so to be sure we aren't using too much. I measure the water with a dipstick.

On this particular night, I found that there was nothing left. It was all gone. My first instinct was to panic. I wasn't sure if we had sprung a leak or if a pump had gone haywire and pumped all our water up out of a pipe. I started laughing hysterically.

What was I laughing about at this inopportune time? The United States Declaration of Independence, which states that everybody has a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. My dire situation exposed this promise for the absurdity that it is. ...
