Cancer: An Introduction

1.1 What is Cancer?

A cell is the structural and functional unit of an organism. Ideally, old and damaged, and damaged cells are replaced by new cells which are constantly generated by a regulated and orderly process called cell division. Cancer is defined as a process where cells in the human body exhibit uncontrollable growth and aberrant cellular function. This phenomenon is observed when genetic changes affect this regulated process. Thus, damaged cells propagate, thrive and multiply, giving rise to lumps of tissue known as tumours. These tumours also tend to spread to different parts of the body. Further, compared to normal cells that exhibit senescence, cancer cells are immortal.
