IN THE FIRST edition of this book, we described a set of forces that, if left unchecked, could disrupt the global market system. We called on business leaders to help mitigate these forces by modifying their corporate strategies, investing in innovation, and collaborating to create new institutions. In the past decade, the forces of disruption have gathered strength, and the threat to market capitalism has intensified. The political landscape has shifted to the point that some U.S. contenders for political office are proud to call themselves socialists, and antiglobalism has become a refrain animating political debates across the globe.
