I photograph to create truly satisfying images. I feel complete when I craft images that are compelling, informative, beautiful, and sometimes troubling. This is what Joseph Campbell called “following my bliss.”
I cannot not photograph, and I can’t stop the internal movie. I see images all the time; even in my dreams.
What do I look for when creating a composition? What are the building blocks? Often, I find a visual element in the landscape that reminds me of something else. For example, this swirl in hardened lava reminded me of a coiled nautilus shell. The design rotates around the center of my frame, and that’s not an accident. I balanced the upper-left and lower-right corners to reinforce the symmetry.
