Framing

We habitually view the world through frames. From televisions to computers to smart phones, we see the world framed by some kind of window. So it should come as no surprise when photographing that we create a virtual window to isolate our chosen subject from the grand landscape. The key is to seek out elements within the landscape to frame our vision.

Massive lenticular clouds form the symmetrical frame in this image. The grandeur and scale of Chile’s Torre Grande is monumental but its scale becomes even more impressive when viewed under the vast Patagonian sky above Lago Grey. The clouds in this photograph effectively frame the peak and focus the viewer’s attention while also adding drama and excitement to the composition.
