Return

Strong images are like invitations calling us back. I cannot look at my favorite images without feeling that sense of longing. I need to know that place is still out there. I want to know that nothing has changed ... even if I have.

And so I return.

The raging Colorado River is an old friend. Its confluence with the Little Colorado River is sacred to the neighboring Hopi tribe and to me as well. Travertine-colored water mingles with the mighty Rio Colorado. It’s both otherworldly and magical.

A few times a year, the angle of the sun is such that it illuminates cliff walls deep into the canyon. Its light brings the rich warm colors, which are in turn reflected in the turquoise Little Colorado River.

My first visit while working as a “swamper” ...
