On January 12, 2010, Christa Brelsford, a PhD student with a Master’s Degree in Engineering, was in Darbonne, Haiti. Her brother, Julian, a volunteer with Haiti Partners, had asked her to conduct a feasibility study on a wall that would protect a rural area from floodwaters.
At 4:53 p.m., the first shockwave of the infamous earthquake hit the small town. Christa, Julian and her hosts clambered down the stairs of the two-story house they were visiting. Christa tripped and fell head first. The building collapsed around her.
