1.4. Overview of Analysis Strategies
Categorical data analysis strategies can be classified into those that are concerned with hypothesis testing and those that are concerned with modeling. Many questions about a categorical data set can be answered by addressing a specific hypothesis concerning association. Such hypotheses are often investigated with randomization methods. In addition to making statements about association, you may also want to describe the nature of the association in the data set. Statistical modeling techniques using maximum likelihood estimation or weighted least squares estimation are employed to describe patterns of association or variation in terms of a parsimonious statistical model.
