Previous chapters address stratified analysis as the assessment of association in sets of 2 × 2 tables, 2 × r tables where the response variable, represented in the table columns, is ordinally scaled, and s × 2 tables where the groups for the row variable are ordinally scaled. Such analyses are special cases of the analysis of sets of s × r tables, which includes the cases where the row and column variables are both nominally scaled, the row variable is nominally scaled and the column variable is ordinally scaled, and the row variable and the column variable are both ordinally scaled.
