Because installing Solaris is the first step, it is one of the most vital. You want to be sure that you select the latest version of the Solaris OS, or at least the latest that your applications will support. Like most manufacturers, Sun continues to develop improvements and added features in its OS as well as its security. You should install the OS in a secure lab environment, or at least isolated from the network, with all the patches that will be applied downloaded and scanned for viruses on a second device. Installing a machine while it is connected to a nonsecure network makes it possible for an attacker to exploit any vulnerability with the OS before you've had time to patch it.
