The Software Configuration Register

Most of the Cisco devices you will deal with in your day-to-day operations require a change in the software configuration register variable to facilitate password recovery. This group of variables has other functions as well and can be used to customize your devices to your individual needs.

These devices have a 16-bit software register that is stored in nonvolatile memory (NVM). Table D-1 describes each of the 16 software configuration memory bits, and Table D-2 lists the details of the boot field.
