Optional Configuration Items

Many optional configuration items are available to you to fine tune your spanning-tree environment. These options include the following:

  • BPDU Guard

  • BPDU Filtering

  • UplinkFast

  • BackboneFast

  • Loop Guard

The following sections describe each of these optional items in more detail. Whether you choose to use these options depends on the specific needs of your network.

BPDU Guard

As you know from previous discussions, PortFast-enabled ports are not allowed to receive BPDUs. The BPDU Guard feature puts a port that is receiving a BPDU in the error-disabled state. You can enable the BPDU Guard feature globally on the switch or on a per-interface basis, but be aware that the feature operates with some differences.
