The mixing of voice and data over the same network is called convergence. Not only can we send voice and data over the same network, we can also send video. Also of interest is a feature that is called Unified Presence, which is essentially similar to the chat functionality used by content providers like Yahoo! and MSN. You can see when people are online and available and then call them, text them, chat with them, and in some cases do an ad-hoc video conference.
