Routing protocols have their own unique characteristics, and various Layer 2 encapsulation types have a big impact on them. Understanding how they work will certainly assist you in troubleshooting them now and later. Most of the statistics listed for each can be found with IOS commands such as show ip protocols, show ip route, and show ip routing-protocol ?. Logging, debug, and protocol analyzers all with various levels of impact on the working environment are certainly valuable tools to see more detail when troubleshooting, too.
However, I want you to reserve them for later chapters. After all, many of these protocols are not just IP-specific.
