A default static route is a statically configured route that can be used by a router if a more specific route to a destination network is not found in the router’s IP routing table. Oftentimes, a branch office router uses a default static route pointing toward the core of a network. The WAN edge routers then needed static routes for the subnets at each branch, with the WAN edge routers advertising these branch subnets into the core using an IGP.
