With the increased adoption of wireless network solutions, network designers are faced with new challenges. Wireless coverage may be required in areas where access point (AP) deployment is difficult. Typical examples are large warehouses where APs have to be positioned more than 300 feet away from the nearest switch (300 feet is the maximum Ethernet cable length as per the 802.3 protocol), or on ceilings where no Ethernet connection is available, and of course outdoors, in large campuses or cities.
