Chapter 2. Implement Location Architecture
To perform location tracking, the Cisco Unified Wireless Network infrastructure access points (APs) detect 802.11 device signals and transmit their received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values to a WLAN controller. Periodically, the Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) or a location appliance queries the controller for the RSSI values of these devices. Because location tracking is understood as the ability to calculate the wireless device position and display this position on a map, you can say that the controllers collect 802.11 information but do not perform location.
