Conventions Used in This Book

This book is organized into eight major parts. If you are unfamiliar with Cisco IPS, you will probably gain the most benefit by reading each part beginning with Part I, “Introduction to Network Security.” If you are already familiar with Cisco IPS, however, you can focus on the specific sections of interest. Furthermore, the layout of the parts enables you to quickly locate the needed information.

The text is sprinkled with notes and sidebars that highlight information that might be of particular importance to you. Some of these notes and sidebars point out potential problems, whereas others clarify terms used within the text.
