Even though it is so "basic" and we see it all the time around us, light is the single biggest stumbling block of science. Physics, from a very simple and straightforward science at the end of the nineteenth century, became very complex and mystical. It forced the scientists in the beginning of the twentieth century to introduce the postulates of quantum physics, the "principles of uncertainty of the atoms," and much more - all in order to get a theoretical apparatus that would satisfy a lot of practical experiments but, equally, make sense to the human mind.
