Some History and Background
Ever since the early human beings devised a spoken language and learned to communicate verbally with each other, there has been a search for ways to extend the distance over which these communications can travel. A variety of methods have been developed over the years since then to do just this.
Shouting, of course, was probably the first thing that these people learned. Then, perhaps, prehistoric people found that they could get their thoughts and ideas further afield by a pattern of sounds resulting from beating on hollow logs.
