“Wow, Jade. You’ve never been subtle, but—wow.”
The meeting is over, and Jade and James have retreated to her office; Jade stretches out on the couch and stares up at the ceiling, while James sits facing her in her desk chair, elbows on knees.
She turns her head to glare at him. “Come on, you know it’s true. Everything I said. And your mom would have agreed with me, 100 percent, if she were still here. It’s times like this I wish she hadn’t retired.”
James puts up a hand. “But she did. Don’t go there—let’s not drag her into this, at least not until we’re clearer about what ‘this’ is. And if we’re talking about our parents . . . you know your dad. Surely you’re not surprised Uncle Dan spent the rest of the meeting ...
