MANY BIG ORGANIZATIONS CAME OUT of the Industrial Age having done people a great disservice. They tried to “take care” of employees: make “human resource” decisions about their development, careers, work content and location. They perpetuated a myth of dependency (“We will decide what you do and where you go.”) And many of us colluded in the myth!
When we expose this myth, it horrifies us. Yet many organizations and people today continue to operate in this dependent way. It’s time for all of us to stop conceding our powers to others and take charge of ourselves in work and life.
