One of my most memorable holidays was with my family at Salcombe, in Devon in the south-west of England. Salcombe is famous for its sailing, and as I am a keen sailor, the prospect of taking the family out in my Wayfarer dinghy was a major attraction. We had a couple of days left, and I was desperate to get out onto the water before returning to our hectic London life. But this being an English summer the weather did not look good. There was a medium-force wind, the sea looked choppy and dark clouds hung over the horizon. We’d be lucky to get a few minutes sailing in. But my two sons – aged 11 and 13 – were ready and mostly willing, so we decided to try it.
