Unite in Support of One-third Reservation for Women

In the first session of the present Parliament the United Front Government introduced the Constitution (Eighty-First) Amendment Bill, 1996. This is the Bill, which seeks to give reservation of one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Since almost all political parties promised such reservation in their election manifesto probably it was taken for granted that the Bill would have a smooth passage.

In the Rajya Sabha women members pressed the Prime Minister to pass the bill on that very day. The Prime Minister agreed.
