As an outsider without a technical background who has come to see some of this place from the inside, there is only one word I can think of to describe a stranger’s initial reaction to Silicon Valley: paradox.
Begin with the basics. Silicon Valley is currently making over our world with electronics. And the upshot of it is, atomic particles, of which the electron is one, represent true enigmas. For these dazzling, dancing charged bodies exhibit properties of both wave and particle, and thereby pose a superb conundrum.
