In the morning of a spring day in 1612, two men met at a beach in the island of Ganryu, off the coast of Japan.

One of them was a neat, well-dressed youth, a wealthy member of the samurai class that ruled the country for over 200 years. He was also one of the most famous sword-fighters in the country, already weapons master for the Hosokawa Lord despite his young age. The other man was much less impressive, a derelict-looking character with threadbare clothes and unkempt hair, someone more similar to a vagrant than a professional warrior.
