China’s ‘soft power’ development by 2020

Debates over China’s rise have been dominated by realist-focused analysis of the ‘dragon’s’ economic might or military muscle. Yet in recent years mounting attention has been paid to China’s attempts to become ‘great’ by also developing its ‘soft power’.2 This term was coined by Joseph Nye as the ability to attract and persuade others through ‘the influence and attractiveness a nation acquires when others are drawn to its culture and ideas’.
