12-2. Configuring IOS Firewall Logging

The IOS firewall uses logging to send system messages to a logging facility. Messages are generated according to a severity level (0 through 7).

Logging messages can be sent to any of five different facilities:

  • The IOS firewall console

  • A temporary buffer on the firewall

  • Telnet or SSH sessions

  • The SNMP trap collector

  • A Syslog server

This chapter discusses only buffered and Syslog logging.

You can set the logging level to determine which messages should be sent to each of the facilities. When you set a severity level for a facility, all messages with a lower severity level are also sent.
