Section 11. Implementing OSPF
Developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a replacement to distance vector routing protocols, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) was created to resolve the problems associated with Routing Information Protocol (RIP).
OSPF is an open standard interior gateway protocol (IGP). It is a link-state protocol that uses the shortest path first (SPF) algorithm. The SPF algorithm is sometimes called the Dijkstra SPF algorithm, after its inventor. OSPF is an open standard protocol, meaning that it is not proprietary to a vendor. As such, OSPF is the routing protocol of choice to route in a multivendor network. (Be prepared for questions on the ICND exam about which routing protocol to use in a multivendor network.) ...
