Public WANs and Internet Access

To build the Internet, an Internet service provider (ISP) needs links to other ISPs and links to the ISP’s customers. The Internet core connects ISPs using a variety of high-speed technologies. Internet access links connect an ISP to each customer, again with a wide variety of technologies. For these customer access links, the technologies need to be inexpensive so that a typical consumer can afford to pay for the service.
