Link Fragmentation and Interleaving (LFI) is a Cisco IOS link-layer efficiency mechanism designed to reduce serialization delay and jitters when transporting both real-time and non-real-time traffic on slow bandwidth links. The Cisco IOS LFI feature discussed in this chapter is based on Cisco's implementation of Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLP) over Frame Relay and ATM, which supports the fragmentation and packet sequencing specifications outlined in RFC 1717.
