The goal of each of the switch architectures presented in this chapter is to move data from source to destination as quickly as possible. Each of the switching architectures implement common features to accomplish this goal, such as high-speed ASICs and switch fabrics, creating very small headers for each packet containing the necessary information, and using a scheduling mechanism when transmitting traffic.
