The primary focus thus far has been on legacy STP as defined by IEEE 802.1D. As you have learned in the previous sections, the immediate hindrance of STP is convergence. It takes anywhere from 30 to 50 seconds depending on the type of failure to converge the network. RSTP helps with convergence issues that plague legacy STP. RSTP has additional features similar to UplinkFast and BackboneFast that offer better recovery at Layer 2 than STP.
