12.1. Introduction to Virtual Private Networks

Virtual private network (VPN) is a term that is used frequently, but has different meanings, depending on who you talk to and the context of your discussion. Let's define what I mean here when I discuss VPNs. When I say VPN, I am talking about a method for connecting two disparate networks, generally over the Internet. Also, for the purposes of discussion, I also assume that the sessions will be encrypted sessions. IPsec is the standard that you will be using in this chapter. IPsec stands for IP Security and is based on a series of requests for comments (RFCs) that were first issued during the mid-to-late 1990s.
