Understanding Routing Protocols
There are two basic types of routing protocols: interior and exterior. Exterior routing protocols such as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) are used between autonomous systems and are beyond the scope of this book.

An autonomous system (AS) is a group of routers under the management of the same entity, usually a corporation or enterprise. An AS will use at least one, and maybe more, interior routing protocols. Interior routing protocols, such as the ones discussed in this chapter, are used within an AS.
