Describing the Switching Process
As a frame is moved from one interface to another interface, either on a point-to-point link or on a shared medium, the operation occurs at the Network Access layer. Even as a packet is relayed across a network from router to router and eventually to the destination subnet, at each point where it is transferred from the interface of one device (either host NIC to router interface, or router interface to router interface), the transfer is made in terms of MAC addresses, not IP addresses.
