Chapter 7. IP Multicast Routing

This chapter presents the background and configuration on IP multicast services, with a focus on the following topics:

7-1: Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM)—Cisco routers support multicast routing using the PIM routing protocol version 1 and version 2. PIM can operate in sparse mode (PIM-SM), dense mode (PIM-DM), sparse-dense mode, bidirectional PIM, and Source Specific Multicast (PIM-SSM).

7-2: Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)—IGMP is a messaging protocol between a host and a router that is used when a host wants to join a multicast group. Routers operate as queriers and maintain a list of multicast group members. Cisco routers support IGMP versions 1, 2, and 3.
