17.16. Algae Culture Conditions and Biodiesel Production

The culture conditions as well as the medium components play an important role in the biodiesel production from microalgae. El-Sheekh et al. [140] studied the enhancement of fatty oil productivity from green microalga S. obliquus through certain modifications and optimization of the culture medium composition. They studied the effect of different concentrations of potassium nitrate, sodium bicarbonate, salinity, glycerol, and molasses of sugarcane on the production of biomass and esterified fatty acids of the alga. The results showed that low concentrations of NaHCO3 (0.5 g/L) caused an increase in the biomass productivity, while it decreased fatty oil productivity at all the tested concentrations. ...
